Under en hjärnoperation när en bit av skallbenet sågas upp sätts biten ofta tillbaka igen efteråt, men ibland läker den inte. Kirurgen Thomas Engstrand, specialiserad på plastik- och rekonstruktiv kirurgi, insåg att man i stället för vanliga plast- och metallimplantat borde kunna ta fram ett material av keramik som kunde fylla samma funktion, fast bättre. Att göra implantat av keramik är inte alls enkelt men professor Håkan Engqvist på Ångströmlaboratoriet hade tagit fram en unik teknik som gjorde det möjligt.
